Salt Box by Sophie Wilson
Salt Box, handmade by Sophie Wilson in her c. 1690 house, The Fens, England, for Salter House.
Each unique terracotta form is embellished with white slip and sgraffito mythical beasts and woodland creatures. Inspired by ancient Greek black figure ware, Renaissance ivory inlay motifs, 19th century Swedish ceramics and 20th century printed textiles.
Inscribed into the clay are the words, "Thou are as dear as salt", which was taken from a Punjabi folk tale about a king and his three daughters.
The hand-carved lid is made from London Plane wood, a tree grown and felled in London. Signed with "1690", the date Sophie Wilson's house was raised.
