The Embroidered Bow Ballet Flat
In January 2024, Salter House collaborated with Loeffler Randall to create a unique embroidered ballet flat emblazoned with a hand-drawn embroidered bow.
The design is anchored in Sandeep's childhood fascination with "The Twelve Dancing Princesses," illustrated by Anne Calton. We wanted to explore an illustrative style rendered in embroidery, to make something that is feminine, but still a little 'off.
The ribbon graphic, meticulously hand-drawn by Rachel Kahn specifically for this project, was beautifully embroidered into the design of the ballet flat. The delicate and intricate rendering, with crinkles and character, is meant to evoke the charm of worn-out ballet shoes. The illustration-style rendering successfully flattens the volume, like flat illusions that are common in ballet's staging, trompe l'oeil backdrops, costumes... and shoes.
