Coco Baudelle Salter House

Hi! Do you live near or far from here (our 2nd street shop)? How would you describe your home? Is there a specific style or design tradition you're drawn to?

"I used to live dangerously close to 2nd street, but the wind has taken me a little further away which makes me a bit nostalgic. I’ve always been enamoured with interiors in films, especially New York ones, and it feels like my new home has brought to life so many cinematic elements I’ve been longing for. A powder blue room, a playwright neighbour, a cinema room."

What's your favorite room at home?

"The bathrooms! I have the best conversations there with Rosetta, my 2 year old daughter. "

Where are you from, originally? Tell us about the house you grew up in.

"I grew up in the suburbs of Montreal, in a quiet neighborhood. Our tv was always on, in a good way. We watched movies morning and night. My mother laughs the loudest and she laughs a lot. I could always hear her from down the street when I walked home from a friend’s house."

Have any movies influenced your style recently?

"I got the last ticket, in the last row of the theatre, to an early screening of Maria with Angelina Jolie, where Pablo Larraín imagines Maria Callas’ last days in 1970s Paris. I felt nourished by the costumes in this movie. There is an intricate knit robe created for the film by Massimo Cantini Parrini, paired with thick squarish eyeglasses, that made my heart flutter."

Do you have a favourite Salter House garment? How do you wear it?

"My friend and fellow filmmaker Daniela Garza wore the Batiste Beatrice Blouse one day. She wore it as she would a regular white t-shirt. Without really thinking about it. Without a worry. I thought she looked otherworldly. I finally just got one for myself, in a bone colour! I’ve been wearing it with jeans and with just undies at home."

Chart yourself on this.

"I would be lying if I said I’m not this entire curve. I get deeply attached to impossibly worn and deteriorating pieces of clothing or shoes, and I also absolutely love to bask in the joy of tiny luxuries like bath oil and thin Italian cotton underwear."

Have you repaired or restored anything recently? If so, tell us about it!

"I just repaired a precious tiny newborn set my son Alton wore. The middle seam of the pants was completely undone, most likely because I tried to make it fit on my little boy way past the newborn size. A very dear friend of mine is having her first baby, and I’m going to gift it to her."

What one house museum would you recommend visiting?

"I just saw Edges of Ailey at the Whitney Museum, and I think I only just then understood the true meaning of art. The beginning of it, I imagine. There is this one bench, in the middle of the grand room, where I found myself weeping, and smiling, in sadness and in hope. I wish this feeling upon everyone."

What else have you been working on recently? Any work we should look out for?

"I directed my first short film last year, when I was 7 months pregnant, back in my hometown. It was a wild idea and it has been a wild ride! I cannot believe we did it. It will be coming to a screen near you (your phone, definitely, but maybe also a theatre, if we are lucky!) sometime in 2025."
