Handmade by Sophie Wilson in her c. 1690 house, The Fens, England, for Salter House.

Handbuilt terracotta jardinière (a pot or stand for the display of growing plants), decorated in white slip and sgraffito, an applied surface detail technique of decoration in relief. Frogs, pea pods and fallen acorn seeds hide amongst pears and caterpillars in a tangle of courgette foliage and tendrils, glazed in muddy yellows and light-on-leaf greens. Ribbons, inspired by Volckamer’s 18th century Nurnbergische Hesperides prints, drape the flora and fauna gaily in a sort of blue-verdigris. The interior is loosely glazed in washy white against red clay, the feet take the form of pea pods.

Hand wash only.
Each Jardinière is Unique
