Cake Plate, handmade by Sophie Wilson in her c. 1690 house, The Fens, England for Salter House.
The Cake Plate, incised with sgraffito in the white slip, has a low, modest form, allowed to warp a little in the process of drying out to produce it's characteristic unevenness. The Cake Plate is unabashedly joyful and ceremonious figures jostle in wait, with humour and good cheer, to be revealed by a devoured cake. The foot of the stand is entirely unglazed, and stamped with small patterns and incisions. Signed with "1690", the date Sophie Wilson's house was raised.
