The Materialization of Life into alternative economies

How might art take shape through the ways we live, work, and exchange? In The Materialization of Life into alternative economies, Ben Kinmont explores five models: collaboration through Paula Hayes/Wild Friends, information through Joseph Grigely, gifts through On Kawara, business through Gordon Matta-Clark, and maintenance through Mierle Laderman Ukeles.

Originally produced for Kinmont’s 1996 exhibition at Printed Matter in New York, the booklet proposes a shift in emphasis from conceptual art’s dematerialization of the object toward the material circumstances of life.

This 2026 facsimile, published by Taufic in collaboration with Kinmont and bookseller Yoshi Hill, reproduces the artist’s own archive copy, including its letterpress archive label and numbering. Released thirty years after the original alongside Hill’s exhibition of the project archive, it preserves the original typesetting, misregistration, typos, and other printing irregularities.
